ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The Cardinals announced a roster move Friday afternoon ahead of their weekend series with the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium.

Infielder Thomas Saggese has been recalled to the big-league roster from Triple-A Memphis, a welcomed sight as the utility man holds a Major League OPS of .876 across 44 plate appearances with the Cardinals this season. That mark is better than the strong .847 OPS he holds at the Triple-A level with the Memphis Redbirds this year.

The bad news, though, is the roster move that was required to allow Saggese’s promotion. Catcher and standout designated hitter Iván Herrera was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left hamstring strain.

The slugger, who carries a team-leading .925 OPS with eight home runs and 36 RBIs this season, now sees his second stint on the IL during this 2025 campaign. Herrera missed more than a month with a bone bruise on the knee of the same left leg that is causing him to hit the shelf on Friday.

The Cardinals are likely to see Pedro Pagés and Yohel Pozo handle the catching duties in Herrera’s absence, with Saggese mixing in across the infield due to his defensive versaility and quality offensive profile.
