CITY SC beats Portland, snaps 5 game winless streak

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - In a humid match in St. Louis that saw a brace by Marcel Hartel and the return of Eduard Löwen, CITY SC broke a five-game winless streak.

St. Louis CITY SC hosted the Portland Timbers in a Sunday night match at Energizer Park. The final score was 2-1, a welcome sight for St. Louis fans.

Portland was the first to score, with David Da Costa finding the back of CITY’s net 19 minutes into the first half.

CITY began their climb back in minute 54. Célio Pompeu passed into the box towards Hartel. The ball took a bounce off of Hartel up and towards the goal and Hartel managed to get a foot on it again on a volley to send it into the top of the net.

In minute 67, Conrad Wallem sent a cross into the box, where Hartel got a head on it to meet the back of the net.

Unsurprisingly, Hartel was named the Man of the Matchday for CITY.

CITY kept their lead through to the end of the match, securing the first win for the team since May 31.

CITY took a total of 21 shots against the Timbers’ keeper, getting eight of those on target.

The match also saw the return of CITY play maker Löwen, who has been out with an injury and to spend time with his wife, Ilona, who has cancer. Löwen was met with loud applause by CITY fans when he entered the match in minute 66.

With the win, CITY is no longer tied with the LA Galaxy and Montréal for least points in the league. LA Galaxy and Montréal sit at the bottom of the Western and Eastern Conferences, respectively, both with 15 points. With tonight’s win earning them a full three points, CITY is now at 18 points. San Diego leads the Western Conference with 42 points.
