ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Matrix Midwest) - Just a month after dealing starting pitcher Sonny Gray to Boston, the Cardinals are now trading first baseman Willson Contreras to the Red Sox in exchange for three pitchers.
According to ESPN, the trade happened on Sunday.
The Red Sox will get Contreras, as well as $8 million to cover the remaining $42.5 million on his contract, in exchange for right-hander Hunter Dobbins, and right-handed pitching prospects Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita.
Similar to Sonny Gray, Contreras waived his no-trade clause.
This past season, Contreras batted .257, with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs.

Since signing with St. Louis in 2023, the 33-year-old has batted over .250, hit 55 home runs and driven in 183 RBIs.
Before an ACL tear that ultimately ended his debut season last year, Dobbins went 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA over 13 outings. The 26-year-old allowed only six home runs through over 60 innings, striking out 45 batters in the process.
Fajardo, 19, posted a 2.25 ERA over 72 innings between the Florida Complex League and Low-A Salem this year.
Aita, a 22-year-old sixth-round pick out of Kennesaw State, struck out 99 batters over two levels. He recently finished a season in High-A and features a mid-90s fastball.
