“This deal is a once-in-a-generation type of opportunity for our community and region. Having the Chiefs headquarters and training facilities here in Johnson County will be huge for our local economy – and a lot of fun for our families,” Bacon said. “We’re eager to get to work, and are committed to ensuring the process – and the result – are first class, something everyone in Olathe – and all across Chiefs Kingdom – can be proud of.”

The Olathe City Council has 60 days to hold a public hearing. The council will then need to adopt an ordinance pledging all local incremental general sales tax within the STAR bond project area to the project.

Other leaders, including the Olathe Chamber of Commerce, believe the deal will have lasting implications that will benefit everyone who calls the city home.

“We’re so glad we were able to keep the Kansas City Chiefs in the region,” President and CEO of the Olathe Chamber of Commerce Tim McKee said. “We’ve been working closely with the City of Olathe and Olathe Public Schools on this incredible opportunity. It has truly been a collaborative effort.”

“We recognize the potential this move brings not only in terms of economic growth and community visibility, but also in the possibilities for meaningful partnerships that support student learning and community engagement,” Olathe Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brent Yeager said.

The idea between the city and Olathe School District began two years ago following a visit to the Dallas Cowboys facility according to McKee.

The mood in Olathe was merry and bright Monday night as families and friends walked along the lit pathways at GLOLATHE. Chiefs fans also had a lot to be happy about with the team’s announcement it was moving to Kansas.

“Yeah, it’s crazy. I’ve only known Arrowhead as Arrowhead, so it will definitely be new, but it will give us a lot of opportunities,” said Eric Hodes. “Whether that’s concerts, Super Bowls, whatever. I think it will be good overall.”

Eric and Eliza Hodes have been season ticket holders for the last seven years. Eliza says they’ve enjoyed cheering the team on and watching the dynasty being built, and they’re excited for this next chapter for the team.

“We’ve had so much fun spending time with the community, out at the football field,” said Eliza. “Whether that be on the weekend, Monday night, Thursday night - we’ve gotten all these primetime games - it’s been a real game changer for the city these past few years.”

Both say they expect Missouri fans to cross the state line to see the games in the new stadium, as Kansans have done for decades. Eliza says she was out shopping when she heard the news, adding she’s excited at the possibility of running into members of the team out in the community.

“I was at Ulta today when we found out,” said Eliza. “So that was really fun talking about all the times we’re going to be rubbing elbows with everybody. Right by the headquarters, stopping by for their girlfriends and family members at stores like Ulta, eating steaks at Longhorn, just being in that community and everyone is looking forward to it.”

The news that in addition to building a new stadium in Kansas, the Chiefs plan on moving its headquarters and the team’s practice facility to Olathe came as a shock to many fans. Some say they’re hearing rumors it will be near K-10 and Ridgeview Rd.

“That’s kind of wild to us,” said Dave Hanks. “We saw a picture the other day and we hiked the trails that are in that area. We couldn’t believe it at first, but then we were like no, it is going right there. So, that’s pretty exciting too.”

While some Missouri fans lamented the announcement, others, like Kansas City, Missouri, native and lifelong Chiefs fan Evan Fisher feel positive about it.

“I like it, I think it’s a great move,” said Fisher. “I think I like the Legends area way more. I think it’s a better location, a better venue. I don’t think the current location of Arrowhead is in the greatest part. I think The Legends will take care of the area and treat the Chiefs pretty well. I think it’s a great move.”
