ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Matrix Midwest) - Today, the United Football League announced several rule changes, including the addition of a 4-point field goal ahead of the 2026 season.

According to the UFL, the rules update includes:

  • The 4-point Field Goal: Any successful field goal attempt from 60 yards or further will be worth four points.
  • One foot in bounds: The UFL will require one foot in bounds for a legal catch.
  • Red Zone penalties: Penalties committed in the red zone will result in half the distance to the goal.
  • Tush push elimination: The UFL has eliminated the tush push.
  • No punting inside 50-yard line: No punts will be allowed from anywhere inside the opponent’s 50-yard line unless it is less than two minutes until the end of a half.
  • 3 attempts per team in overtime: Teams will alternate attempts from the 5-yard line. If, after the three attempts per team, the tie remains, teams will alternate attempts until a winner is determined.
  • PAT attempts: Teams will have three scrimmage play options to elect their PAT attempt, plus a new one-point kick option.

New kick-off rules:

  • The ball will be kicked from the 30-yard line; the 10 remaining players on the kickoff team will line up at the receiving team’s 45-yard line.
  • The receiving team’s setup zone will stretch from its 40-yard line to the 35-yard line and must have at least nine players in that zone.
  • The landing zone will be from the receiving team’s 20-yard line to the goal line. The ball must reach the landing zone, or it will be spotted at the 40-yard line.
  • If the ball travels out of bounds, it will be spotted at the 40-yard line.
  • There will be two touchdown spots - the 40-yard line for balls kicked into the end zone, and the 20-yard line for balls that hit in the landing zone and then enter the end zone.
