EVANSVILLE, In. (WGEM) -The Leathernecks have been in a post season drought for a decade, but in this year’s OVC Championship game, that all changed.
Western Illinois marked their names in the history books after defeating Lindenwood 71-65.
“It’s amazing. I’m having so much fun! The confetti, the fans, celebrating, cutting down the nets, it’s been amazing and a surreal experience,” said WIU Forward Mallory Shetley.
Shetley won the tournament MVP, as well as making the tournament all team alongside her teammate Mia Nicastro.
“It’s such a surreal feeling to win, but it’s even more special to do it with people that you love so much,” said WIU Forward Mia Nicastro. “I’m just so excited to soak it all in with all of the girls, everyone who’s contributed to our success, all the community members, all of our fans, and just bring some hardware back to Macomb. We have the best fans in the world, we have the best community in the world, so I’m just excited to share it with everyone.”
The Leathernecks leave Evansville Indiana as the OVC Champions and secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
