Report: Chiefs free up cap space with Karlaftis contract restructure

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Chiefs reportedly freed up some cap space on Wednesday, converting a portion of defensive end George Karlaftis’ salary into a signing bonus.

According to a report from Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti, the Chiefs converted $9.685 million of Karlaftis’ salary into a signing bonus. The move creates $7.7 million in 2026 cap space for general manager Brett Veach.

Ginnitti says Kansas City now has an estimated $13 million in cap space as it enters June. Still, first-round picks Mansoor Delane and Peter Woods have yet to put pen to paper on their rookie deals.

Once Delane and Woods sign, the Chiefs would have a few million to work with for any potential free agent signings to round out the offseason.

Karlaftis signed a four-year, $88 million contract extension with the Chiefs prior to the 2025 season. In 2026, his base salary will be $1.215 million, according to Spotrac, while his salary hit will count against the Chiefs’ cap at $7.4 million.
