KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The vast majority of the Kansas City Chiefs roster arrived at voluntary OTAs this week.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wide receiver Xavier Worthy were each seen participating -- albeit in yellow non-contact jerseys -- Thursday, as Mahomes recovers from a torn ACL and Worthy from a torn labrum.

“We’ve been lucky though. We’ve had great success with people showing up,” Reid said as Phase 3 of the Chiefs’ organized team activities continued Thursday.

Despite the positive turnout, one of the notable absences this week has been wide receiver Rashee Rice, who is actively serving a 30-day jail sentence following a probation violation for a positive THC test on May 19.

On Thursday, head coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters for the first time since Rice’s arrest.

“As far as Rashee goes, we are aware of the situation. The league is aware of it,” said Reid of the SMU product, who was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft and has had trouble staying on the field due to injury and suspension. “There has been no talk about anything further. We are moving forward now as we go here.”

Before Rice violated the terms of his probation, he reportedly underwent a clean-up surgery to remove loose debris from his right knee. That’s the same knee that Rice tore ligaments in during Week 4 of the 2024 season.

“When he gets back we’ll have to get him caught up and doing what he needs to do,” Reid said, “and then make sure he gets it. It’s not an easy thing that he’s going through. Life lessons are important. We’re all given chances to learn and he’s in that position now.”

Reid was asked Thursday whether he trusts Rice’s judgment, but declined to answer the question and instead stressed the importance of life lessons being learned.

The clean-up surgery for Rice had an expected two-month recovery, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Reid said the Chiefs expect that Rice will be available for training camp when that begins in St. Joseph later this summer.

“We think he’ll be ready for camp. As we go forward, we’ll just see how it goes,” Reid said, noting the fourth-year receiver knows he needs to avoid infection. “He’s been in communication with (head athletic trainer) Rick (Burkholder) and he knows the rehab he can do (in jail). I think they’re keeping an eye on him.”

Rice missed the first six games of 2025 due to the suspension for his role in the six-car crash and finished the year with 53 receptions, 571 yards and 5 touchdowns, missing the final few games of the 2025 season due to a concussion.

This offseason, Rice was accused of domestic assault in a civil lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend. The NFL investigated the claims and closed it, determining that Rice would not be suspended for a second time.
