KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Patrick Mahomes is back on the practice field, 165 days after suffering a serious knee injury in last December’s Chargers game.
The quarterback was able to move around and throw the football, though his left knee is not at full strength. He wore a full knee brace during the session.
“It’s good to be back on the field. Good to be here with the guys,” Mahomes said. “When you’re rehabbing by yourself, when you’re with some other guys, you get the juice when everyone gets back in the building.”
Coach Andy Reid said Mahomes has worked hard to reach this point.
“He busted his tail to put himself in this position, most guys wouldn’t do this, but he’s put himself in that position,” Reid said. “I like what I’ve seen. This is good for him. It’s rehab.”

Mahomes said the knee brace is not an issue.
“I wore a brace in college on the same knee, so it’s not too different than what I’ve done before, so it’s just getting adjusted to it,” he said.
Return timeline uncertain
Mahomes said his goal is to avoid missing games.
“I don’t want to miss games if at all possible. It’s not all in my control, it’s in God’s control at some point,” he said. “I’m going to give myself a chance by the way I work to give me a chance to be the best I can be.”
Reid took a cautious approach when asked about Mahomes’ timeline.

“People ask if he’s ahead of schedule, well, who made the schedule? Everybody’s different,” Reid said.
Teammate Drue Tranquill praised Mahomes’ approach to recovery.
“A lot of things make Pat great, but one of the things I think he would say and I observe about him is that he’s just ultra competitive,” Tranquill said. “He’s a ‘bull in the china shop’ when it comes to attacking the rehab.”
Bieniemy returns as offensive coordinator
Mahomes also addressed the return of Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator.
“It’s great to have him back in the building, to have that energy back,” Mahomes said. “A lot of these guys haven’t had an ‘EB,’ so they understand it, but I think it’s been cool that they’re really receptive of it.”
Mahomes said Bieniemy holds players to a high standard.
“There’s a standard we have to play with and he’s going to hold you to that, no matter who you are,” he said. “I love it, man, I truly do. And I think you can feel it even in the meeting rooms. The way he carries himself with the confidence that he carries himself with.”
