KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Chiefs rookies and quarterbacks report to training camp in St. Joseph, Mo. Friday. Here are the top three storylines we’re watching:
Mahomes’ Knee
The condition of Patrick Mahomes’ left knee is the top storyline not just for the Kansas City Chiefs, but across the entire NFL as training camp opens.
When Mahomes reports to camp Friday, it will have been 233 days since he injured his left knee against the Los Angeles Chargers. While the quarterback participated in offseason workouts, training camp presents a greater challenge — and his on-field performance will be the measure that matters.
Mahomes has stated a goal of starting Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, but he will need to demonstrate his readiness to teammates and coaches during camp to reach that mark.

Retooled defensive line under the microscope
The Chiefs’ second major storyline centers on a rebuilt defensive line. Kansas City added free agent defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga, then used draft picks on another tackle and an edge rusher.

The group’s ability to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks is considered a critical factor in whether the Chiefs can return to the playoffs.
Rice returns after suspension, surgery and jail sentence
Wide receiver Rashee Rice is the third storyline to watch. Over his three seasons in Kansas City, Rice has dealt with a knee injury, a six-game suspension, a second knee surgery and a 30-day jail sentence.
