KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - As the Chiefs gear up to welcome the entire squad to training camp this week, the team was dealt some frightening news late Sunday.

The wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was shot at the couple’s home in northern Virginia.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office had reported that officers responded to the 20000 block of Northpark Drive on Sunday evening for an incident.

ESPN reported that 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy was hospitalized after being shot. Police in Loudoun County, Virginia, confirmed that a woman was being treated for “serious injuries” but did not say her identity.

Eric Bieniemy’s son, 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was arrested on suspicion of:

The Chiefs released the following statement:

The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family.

Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Head coach Andy Reid addressed the incident Monday following morning practice.

“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” Reid said. “Thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Bieniemy has been at training camp with the Chiefs since rookies and quarterbacks reported to St. Joseph, Missouri, on July 24.

“Mia is stable, which is a plus, and so is Eric Jr.,” Reid said. “And that’s all important.”

Bieniemy rejoined the Chiefs earlier this year to take over for Matt Nagy as their offensive coordinator, a position he previously held.

During his three seasons away from Kansas City, Bieniemy spent time as the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator, UCLA Bruins offensive coordinator, and Chicago Bears running backs coach.

The Bears, with whom he spent the 2025 season, averaged the third-most rushing yards per game in the NFL.

Bieniemy had served as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2018-22 and was with the Chiefs from 2013-22, spending his first five seasons in Kansas City as the team’s running backs coach.

Reid said there is no timetable for Bienemy’s return to the coaching staff and that the coordinator would be given time to be with his family.

“On these things, real life — so you take care of that, and that becomes important,” Reid said.
