CAMP NOTES: Full Chiefs squad reports to St. Joseph for training camp

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KCTV) - Training camp is underway in St. Joseph, and the full Kansas City Chiefs squad will take the field at Missouri Western State University for the first time on Wednesday.

Rookies and quarterbacks arrived in St. Joe last week and kicked off their training camp activities on July 24.

The Wednesday session is exclusive for season ticket members. Thursday’s practice will be available to the general public for the first time.

Andy Reid said Patrick Mahomes was able to do ‘everything’ on Wednesday. After being fully cleared to practice on Friday, Mahomes was also a full participant this past Saturday and Sunday with just rookies and quarterbacks in attendance, and took Monday to rest.

“He looked pretty good today, I thought. You know, strong. You see the strength in his legs, which is important with a leg injury. You kind of look at that first. See how his feet are moving, his feet are moving well.”

With the full team now in St. Joe, there’s a heightened intensity and more physicality in practice. But Coach Reid said Mahomes adjusted to it quite well.

“He’s prepared for those things. And Julie has done a great job with him, with his rehab, of really giving him opportunities to push off, whether it’s lateral or straight ahead, to make sure he can escape as needed. He’s got good strength. He made good strength through the practices he’s been in, where he can still bend and throw. And he trusts the leg to drive on it. So, those are all important things. But, I mean, I stand right behind him. So, we talk.”

Travis Kelce walked down the hill for his 14th summer in St. Joseph. This was the first time seeing Kelce since marrying Taylor Swift at Madison Square Garden on July 3rd, with many Chiefs in attendance.

Coach Reid was impressed by how good of shape Kelce is in at 36-years-old, and pointed out the priceless worth of his leadership in camp with so many young guys on the roster.

“He looked pretty good. He stayed in shape. He did a lot of dancing at his wedding,” Reid laughed. “He works so hard and he wants to be in there. For a young guy to look at that, it’s hard for them to make an excuse to take a rep off because he’s out there going. And if they try to get sneaky, he yanks them back in there. So it makes him go. That’s always good to have.”

Rashee Rice has also been cleared to practice, after undergoing a procedure to clean up debris in his knee this offseason. That procedure happened one week before he tested positive for THC, violating his probation, and he then had to spend 30 days in jail - missing Mandatory Minicamp. Rice was granted permission by the Dallas County Court to receive physical therapy for his knee while in jail.

Andy Reid said both Rice and L’Jarius Sneed had to leave practice about halfway through to receive some treatment, which was planned in advance. They plan to gradually ramp them up as they go.

Reid also gave an update on offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s wife, Mia, who police say was shot by their son, Elijah, in their Northern Virginia home on Sunday night. She is out of the ICU and is making progress.

Bieniemy has not been at camp since the incident, and there’s no exact timeline for him to return.

Reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III took to the podium, and said he’s willing to play any role they need him to to help get the Chiefs back to their winning ways. He’s also excited to try the barbecue in Kansas City, and interact with the fans.

“They want to win, and they’ve won many Super Bowls before, so definitely you see the work ethic that’s going on around here. Everybody wants to compete and win, and we’ll go out there and see how we play this season,” Walker said.
