ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KCTV) - The Chiefs were greeted by great news the day they arrived in St. Joe to open their training camp, as Patrick Mahomes was cleared to practice fully. Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid announced the news.
“Right now he’s got clearance to practice and do all the different periods that we have,” Reid said.
Mahomes, who underwent surgery on his left knee, has participated in every drill and pass attempt asked of him during the first nine days of camp.
“I trust the process that I’ve been through,” Mahomes said. “I feel amazing and I just got to keep continuing with that.”
Walker, veterans make early impressions
New running back Kenneth Walker has been among the standout performers at camp, and he was immediately impressed by Mahomes.

“I see why he’s a great player,” Walker said. “I see it in the way he practices and the way he leads the team, the energy that he brings.”
The Super Bowl MVP also spoke to the team’s culture. “You see the work ethic that’s going on around here,” he said. “They want to win.”
Walker’s competitive nature was on display Friday when linebacker Drue Tranquill collided with him at the end of a play, prompting Walker to throw the ball at Tranquill.
“Small moment — we’re just competing at the end of the down, trying to get the ball out, punch the ball, and Kenneth’s fired up, throws the ball,” Tranquill said. “We’re smiling at each other after the play. It’s all love.”
Tranquill also noted the value of having a player like Walker on the field during camp. “To have a guy out there to train you and help sharpen your blade as you get ready for the season is great,” he said.

Veteran tight end Travis Kelce also arrived at camp in shape. Reid credited Kelce’s recent wedding. “He stayed in shape,” Reid said. “He did a lot of dancing at his wedding.”
Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen draws attention
Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen, No. 13, has made plays as a returner on kicks and punts and as a receiver. Special teams coordinator Dave Toub said Allen is positioning himself to contribute.
“Really doing well on offense,” Toub said. “He’s doing a good job. He’s putting himself in position to be a guy who’s going to help us this year.”
Allen appeared to suffer a leg injury Saturday, but ESPN is reporting it is a bruised shin.
Defensive rookies in learning mode
On defense, rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane, No. 5, is expected to start. Defensive tackle Peter Woods, No. 99, and edge rusher R. Mason Thomas, No. 51, have also drawn notice.
“I’m excited to go against the best in practice,” Delane said. “It makes me better.”
Thomas said knowing the playbook is key to playing at full speed. “Knowing the playbook — that helps you play fast,” he said. “So if you know what to do, you can do it at a high speed, there’s no hesitation.”
All of the early camp work has come without full pads. Toub cautioned against reading too much into what has been seen so far.
“Right now, you see players and they’re really showing up and looking good in shorts, and then all of a sudden they disappear with pads,” Toub said. “It’s always good to put the pads on — you play football in pads.”
The team is scheduled to put on helmets and pads Monday.
