CBC remains undefeated, takes down Lipscomb 65-33
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Matrix Midwest) - CBC improved to 5-0 Friday night after defeating Lipscomb Academy 65-33.
Going into this one, the Cadets had beaten the Mustangs in back-to-back years. And for the third year in a row, CBC came out victorious over its out-of-state opponents.
CBC started the scoring early.
While under pressure, quarterback Nick McClellan took a short rush into the end zone to give the Cadets a 7-0 lead after just one drive.
Shortly after, McClellan rifled a pass on the run into the endzone for receiver Corde Gage, making it 14-0 with four minutes left in the quarter.
But Lipscomb was able to salvage the final few minutes as they drove down the field and converted a short run near the goal line to make it 14-7 before the end of the quarter.
To start the second quarter, the Cadets handed the ball off to running back Courtney Rivers near the 10-yard line, and he pounded his way into the endzone for a 21-7 advantage.
After stopping the Mustangs on their responding drive, CBC continued to find success on offense. Running back Vic Williams took a short pass nearly 60 yards into the endzone, giving the Cadets a 28-7 lead.
With seconds left until halftime, CBC added a field goal to make it 31-7 at the half.
The second half started with a CBC turnover as Nick McClellan had a short pass intercepted in Cadet territory. Lipscomb was able to capitalize on the mistake with a touchdown soon after, making it 31-13 just a few minutes into the third quarter.
McClellan would bounce back, however, with a rushing touchdown to make it 38-13 midway through the third quarter.
But, on fourth down, the Mustangs responded. A short pass on fourth and four turned into a 65-yard touchdown to make it 38-19.
The back-and-forth affair continued when CBC’s offense resumed. Vic Williams broke away for a long run, nearly the length of the field, for another Cadets score. CBC was ahead 45-19 with just a few minutes left until the final quarter.
It was, in fact, a dominating rushing performance by CBC in the third. With around a minute left, Courtney Rivers was handed the ball from near mid field and he took it to the house.
CBC extended its lead to 51-19, marking the fourth time the team has surpassed 50 points in a game this season.
But, right on cue, the Mustangs responded with a long touchdown pass immediately after. A total of six touchdowns were scored in the third quarter, with the score at 51-25 in favor of CBC.
The fourth quarter started right where the third left off; with a touchdown. Nick McClellan was able to escape a heavy blitz by the Mustangs and break away for a Cadet touchdown, making it 58-25.
The Mustangs and Cadets both scored in their following drives. For CBC, Vic Williams broke away again for a long run into the Mustang endzone.
The game ended with a final score of 65-33 in favor of CBC, improving their overall record to 5-0.
